Wonderful framed and matted antique George H. Walker map of Martha's Vineyard, Plate 11 (pp. 124-125), from Walker's Massachusetts Atlas, first edition, published in 1891. Finely engraved map shows roads, rails and landmarks, printed in light green and black with shoals outlined in red on off-white bond paper. Painstakingly researched and engraved, Walker designed his atlas for "popular use", a departure from past atlas work. Local landmarks and features were solicited from town officials and the placement of roads and rails were reviewed several times to ensure those unfamiliar with roads and pathways would use the best roads. Framed and matted in a 1/2" black wood. frame, 1" deep. This is for the Martha's Vineyard map only. Please see separate listing for Nantucket map from same edition.
Map measures 27 1/2" w x 19 1/2" h and approximately 33" x 24 1/2" framed.
