The marks on this 1850 butter knife read: lion passant (sterling), sovereign's head (duty mark), capital letter B in cropped cornered shield (date letter for 1850), anchor (Birmingham assay office), and GU for George Unite (the maker's initials). George Unite registered with the Birmingham office in 1832. This is a beautifully crafted knife with a nicely etched design on the sterling blade and a decoratively carved mother-of-pearl handle. The monogram on the reverse side of the blade lends decoration to an otherwise plain view. In addition to butter, enjoy using for pate, potted meats, or other soft spreadables. In truly superb condition with no nicks, deep scratches, or cracks. See less
