Erwin Günther studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. There Olof Jernberg was his teacher. In Düsseldorf, where he became a member of the artists' association Malkasten, he established himself as a marine painter. He made numerous trips in Europe, from 1890 to the Netherlands, also to Egypt and other countries in Africa. from 1891 he was represented at exhibitions of the Munich Glass Palace and from 1893 at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. For the German shipping pavilion at the Paris World's Fair in 1900, he made large decorative wall paintings. He took part in the First World War as a cavalry captain.
