Made for the Western export market, the substantial oval serving dish is hand-painted in underglaze cobalt with the characteristic Canton landscape vocabulary of waterside architecture, distant mountains, trees and waterways. The fitted domed cover continues the landscape decoration and is finished with a sculptural finial.

Covered entrée and vegetable dishes of this form were produced as components of extensive Chinese export dinner services made for European and American households. The combination of Western serving form and Chinese landscape decoration is characteristic of Canton export porcelain produced around the turn of the 19th century.

The hand-painted decoration shows the charming variations expected of period export porcelain, while the exposed foot and underside retain evidence of the traditional manufacture and firing process.

Remarkably well preserved for its age, the dish is in very good antique condition with no chips or cracks, showing only appropriate surface and manufacturing irregularities consistent with age and hand production. Please review photographs for complete condition details.
A beautiful and increasingly decorative example of early Chinese export porcelain, substantial enough to display independently on a table, sideboard or cabinet while retaining its original function as a covered serving vessel.
