A striking mid-20th-century modernist painting depicting an abstracted suspension bridge, signed “Spelman” at lower right.
Measuring a substantial 36 by 30 inches, the composition reduces the architecture of the bridge to a powerful arrangement of structural lines, geometric forms and broad passages of color. The vertical elements of the towers and cables intersect with the long horizontal sweep of the bridge, creating a composition that moves between recognizable architecture and abstraction.
The restrained palette and expressive handling give the painting a distinctly mid-century character. Rather than rendering the bridge literally, the artist uses its engineering structure as the framework for an exploration of line, mass, rhythm and space.
The subject appears to be a large suspension bridge and may depict the George Washington Bridge in New York, although the location has not been definitively identified. The architectural subject and urban character give the work particular appeal for a New York interior while allowing the image to function independently as an abstract modernist composition.
The painting is signed “Spelman” at lower right. Research has not yet established the artist's identity, and the work is therefore offered as an unidentified signed mid-century painting rather than attributed to a specific artist.
Unframed, the work has a direct, architectural presence and substantial scale, making it particularly effective over a console, credenza or sofa or as part of a collection of postwar and modernist art.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-appropriate surface and edge wear. Please review photographs carefully for the most complete assessment of condition.
