Danish architect Sophus Frandsen created the Fibonacci for Fog & Mørup, in the early 1960s. Despite being one of the company’s most expensive lights it remained in production until F&M’s demise in the early 1980s. The light was awarded a gold medal at the Leipzig Messe in 1967 and won the iF Product Design Award in 1968.
The lamp is named after the mathematical sequence of the same name which likewise exists at the point where art and science meet and also describes the relationship between the lamp's multiple concentric rings.
An interesting feature of the lamp is the way the bulbholder's position in the central stem can be raised or lowered, causing the light to be concentrated on the central rings in the former position or cast across the full span of the lamp to the outer rings in the latter (see photos) – in both cases without any glare.
