A very fine antique bronze study of a charming game bird by Ferdinand Pautrot (1832-1874) Poitiers, France.
It depicts a standing pheasant raised on a naturalistic base with a rich gilded verdigris patina and intricate surface detail, signed F. Pautrot. The attractive green color, verdigris, is primarily the result of a chemical reaction between the bronze and environmental factors. It stands 13" tall.
Pautrot's style is recognizable in the precision he brings to the hand-chased surface details of his cast bronze animal sculptures. He specialized in birds, dogs, rabbits, and horses and exhibited at the Salon in Paris from 1861 to 1870, though little information exists about his personal life.
Ferdinand Pautrot's highest auction sale was at Christie's in London, England, in 2004 for $35,990.
