Looking for a new activity for your family & friends? Handsome sphere bookends or paper weights? Or a true conversation starter in your great room decor? The game of lawn bowls is portable, easy to learn, and playable for all ages. The game originated in the former British Empire, remains popular there, and is similar to Italian bocce or French boules but played on grass rather than a crushed stone court.
The set consists of 4 vintage English lawn bowls (5.125" Dia.) in a leatherette satchel (15"Wx 6"D x 12"H) complete with felt tube to protect the balls' surfaces when stored. Fabricated for use in the UK, they were discovered in an antique auction there.
The manufacturer is Taylor Rolph Co. Ltd., founded in 1913 at Cambridge, England. Each bowl bears a black finish with a red medallion and is numbered 1-4 within the medallion at one end and features the previous owner's initials "T.Y." at the other.. Surrounding the medallion is stamped "Tyrolite 5 1/8" Bias 3". We believe the ensemble to be C.1960.
Condition of the lawn bowls is very good; surface wear appropriate to age and previous use. The bag is also in very good condition with functioning leather closing straps and minor edge wear; the felt covered tube inside shows noticeable wear (see photo).
