Jacobean means Jacobus in Ecclesiastical Latin, which is the equivilent of James in our English language. During this time furniture became increasingly rich in color, detail, and design. Materials from other parts of the world, like mother-of-pearl, were now available by worldwide trade and were used as decoration. Even familiar materials, such as wood and silver, were worked more deeply in intricate and intensely three-dimensional designs.

I do not know exactly how old this chair is though the 1600's does seem like a stretch. This style of architecture remained influential at different times throughout different parts of the world. While I believe it to be an antique, I believe it more likely was an influence of the Jacobean era than actually a piece from the Jacobean era, but I can not say for sure. Please read the condition statement for more details on how this unique piece has been restored from its found condition. less

I disconnected and cleaned up the legs back and seat and re-assembled to achieve both stability and eliminate rocking. I cleaned and freshly stained the wood that was quite worn. When I found this chair its fabric was falling apart and had been tacked unevenly. The edge of the fabric was not tucked under as it is to be in furniture and instead was fraying on the outside of the tack border. The original cushion underneath the upholstery remains however I replaced the fabric and brass tacks as well as adding more tacks then what were there before to provide greater quality. less
