The substantial standing figure is finished in the traditional three-color palette associated with sancai ware, with warm amber-brown glaze accented by deep green tack and saddle details and contrasting cream-colored mane, bridle, and drapery. Applied ornamental elements decorate the body, while the elongated head, arched neck, flowing mane, and upright stance give the horse a wonderfully expressive presence.

The horse stands on an integral rectangular base and measures approximately 15 inches high, making it an impressive decorative sculpture for a console, bookcase, mantel, or collected interior. Its aged glaze, hand-finished details, and subtle variations in surface give the piece considerably more character than later mass-produced reproductions.

Inspired by the ceramic horses created during China's Tang Dynasty, sancai—literally “three colors”—typically combines lead glazes in amber, green, cream, and related tones. Twentieth-century examples such as this became highly decorative interpretations of these historic forms and remain popular in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
