Traditionally known in the West as a Chinese “Mudman,” the figure was made in Shiwan (historically romanized as Shekwan), Guangdong Province, an important center of ceramic production known for its expressive sculptural pottery and richly colored glazes.

The seated figure holds a fan and a bag or grouping of coins, traditional auspicious imagery associated with prosperity and good fortune. His expressive face and hands are left largely unglazed, providing a wonderful contrast with the glossy green, blue and ochre glazes of his robes and accessories.

The underside bears a faint impressed “CHINA” export mark, consistent with Chinese wares made for export around the turn of the 20th century.

At approximately six inches high, the figure has wonderful character and displays beautifully as a small piece of Chinese folk and decorative art.

Dimensions: approximately 6" H × 3" W × 2" D.

Very good antique condition with expected variations and signs of age consistent with early Shiwan pottery. Please see photographs for details. See less
