William James Müller, Tent of Wandering Yurooks, Xanthus.A curious watercolour attributed to William James Müller (1812–1845), the best-known artist of the Bristol school. The subject and composition is similar to Müller's watercolour Untitled (Tent of wandering Yurooks, Xanthus) in the British Museum (no.1878,1228.109), with some differences to the tent and the landscape, and less detail to the figures. In 1843–4 Müller travelled in Lycia (now part of Turkey) and provided a remarkable visual record of these populations and their dwellings in numerous watercolour sketches.The present watercolour curiously has the barely visible stamp 'Evans of Bristol' on the verso, which has historically been effaced and the attribution 'W.J. Muller?' is written on the verso of the mount.Provenance: Albany Gallery CollectionOn wove paper laid down on mounting card with wash line and window cut verso.All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
