Once more, Jay Strongwater's artistic vision and impeccable workmanship combine to deliver amazing pieces of art. This challenge was quite daunting - Chinese Guardian Lions, commonly called stone lions in China and sometimes called fu or foo dogs in the West, are symbolic sculptures of the Asiatic lion. They are placed at the entrances of important buildings to guard the grounds and the people within. They have been part of the history of China and southeast Asia for thousands of years. As with much of Asian culture, these ancient guardian lions are complex and multifaceted expressions of symbolic Chinese traditions. Jay clearly did his research, as his Guardian Lions reflect the cultural nuances which have developed around the Guardian lions over the centuries. He created incredible art pieces which are historically and culturally accurate, yet fresh and new, he introduced these cultural icons to new generations around the world, and he did all of this respectfully, honoring the beliefs of millions.
Guardian Lions have a significant role even in modern Asia, and there are pairs of these stone lions at the entrances of notable public buildings, businesses, and some personal residences. The female (Yin) represents nuturing strength, compassion, loving care, and teaching, and she protects the people inside the building. The male lion (Yang) displays outward power and dominion over the physical world, resting his paw on the sphere of imperial influence. They are always installed as a pair to provide balance and harmony. Feng Shui directs that both lions should face outward from the building, and that, to someone approaching the building, Yang should be on the right and Yin on the left. If they are displayed inside, they should be kept together, so as to provide harmony and balance.
The two Guardian Lions shown here were intended as a pair, as you can see from their consistent adornment. I respectfully offer them for sale together, as a set. While their beauty and detail is undeniable, I hope that you also appreciate them for the role they have played for thousands of years in Asian cultures.
