Pair of candelabra “trees”, franz hagenauer, werkstatte hagenauer vienna, around 1930, mod. No. 2176, marked.
franz and karl hagenauer won the gold medal at the 1930 triennale in milan for their design of a candle holder named “baum” (tree). The design of the meticulously welded brass tube with four arms and loosely attached sockets on a round base was groundbreaking for its time. This early design object would go on to become one of the most successful models of the werkstatte hagenauer. The “tree” candle holder was made of brass or nickel-plated brass. It was also silver-plated upon customer request. With its minimalist, futuristic design language, the sculptural concept attracted a lot of media attention in 1930 and remains a sought-after design classic even today. Marked with “whw” in the circle and “made in/austria”
