Cutting Grass, acrylic on card stock by James Chamunorwa [signed l.r.], late 1980s. Image size: 8 x 9" displayed in mat [13 1/2 x 13 1/2 overall].
Chamunorwa uses an Expressionist style to portray the people of Zimbabwe in their daily pursuits. His Expressionism attempts to create vivid emotional reactions through powerful colors and dynamic composition. He distorts and exaggerates his figures while using intense colour, agitated brushstrokes, and disjointed space.
James Chamunorwa was born 1961 in Zimbabwe [formerly Rhodesia] and studied art at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Mbare. He now lives in the Capitol Harare [formerly Salisbury]. He is a book illustrator, painter and sculptor. He exhibits throughout Zimbabwe, including the National Gallery.
