We are pleased to have obtained an authentic F.A. Ravier. He was an artist that was not recognized during his time as well as he should have been, but is becoming fully appreciated.

François Auguste RAVIER (1814-1895) was born in Lyon. He was known for his landscape paintings. Though his parents encouraged him to seek a legal career, he went to Paris. Like all young men who are encouraged, he studied from 1833 – 1839 the law as his parents requested, but he also enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied with Théodore Caruelle d'Aligny. When he visited Royat in 1835, he was greatly influenced by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and this shows in his early works.
He worked in Italy from 1840 to 1845, after some urging from Corot. This is where he spent time with the French art community and also wandered the countryside painting. Upon his return , he settled in Crémieu and then moved to Morestel in 1868. Morestel was attractive because of the lighting and landscapes. It was here that others (mostly younger) took interest in his technique and sought his advice. They eventually formed a group called "École de Morestel". Unfortunately for the world, he began to suffer from a progressive blindness. He was a great admirer of J.M.W. Turner.
