On a summer day in 1968, designer Henning Koppel sketched his daughter Hannah’s two-year-old son, Adam, sitting in the garden wearing a sun hat. Initially created as a study for a bust, the charming drawing of the little head with a hat later inspired the design of a lamp.

In 1972, the lamp — affectionately named Bubi (an informal German term meaning “lad” or “little boy”) — was brought to life by Louis Poulsen. Bubi’s closed “hat,” concealing the socket, was made of brass, while the light from an incandescent bulb was filtered and diffused through opalized polycarbonate.

Although Koppel intended Bubi to function both as a pendant lamp and as a freestanding light resting on a shelf, the latter proved impractical at the time: even with a modest 40-watt bulb, the lamp would overheat. Despite its appealing sculptural form, Bubi was discontinued after five years.

In 2010, Pandul reissued the lamp, now compatible with low-energy bulbs that produced minimal heat — finally allowing it to be used as Koppel had originally envisioned.

This piece is a rare original production by Louis Poulsen A/S, dating from the early 1970s.
