Offered is a rare and early antique French pottery cruché or jug. This beautiful green glazed jug is typical of the pottery made in the Saintes region of southwest France. Pottery has been produced in this area since the 13th century. This region was rich with fine clay, water for processing the pottery, and wood to fire the kilns. The best known vessels from Saintes are the tall jugs with glazed decoration. This example has perpendicular handles and a green glaze, which is the hallmark style of Saintonge. This cruché dates from the late 18th century.
This piece is over 200 years old, but has held up remarkably well. It shows wear related to age and use, but is in overall excellent antique condition. There are some areas of glaze loss, minor chipping at the base and the pouring spout, plus some discoloration of the unglazed clay base. It is watertight, but I would not recommend using it as a pouring vessel. This rare piece would make a statement on it's own, or mixed with other provincial pottery.
Please see the photos that I have provided as they are an important part of the description.
