François Nicholas Riss (1804 Moscow-1886 ibid)
Born in Russia, he studied painting in Paris under Baron Antoine-Jean Gros. During his stay in France he mostly created portraits, including the famous portrait of the discoverer of Canada, Jean Cartier. In the thirties of the 19th century he returned to Russia and settled in St- Petersburg. There he painted portraits of princes Grigory Volkonsky and Alexei Golitsyn, as well as of the poet Vasily Andreyevich Zhukovsky. In 1863 he was honored with honorary membership of the Academy of Fine Arts.
