Set has 2 armchairs and 10 side chairs. … more Set of 12 mahogany Philadelphia Chippendale style dining chairs, early 20th Century. Set has 2 armchairs and 10 side chairs. Chairs have pierced gothic style splats raised on cabriole legs with carved knees on ball and claw feet. These chairs show lots of hand work and came from a small but talented cabinet shop in my opinion. If you look through the photos you will see one photo with 2 of the slip seats flipped up. These 2 chairs when the set was being made were intended to be the armchairs. Note the roman numerals on the front seat rail I and II also on the side rail not the start of 2 screw holes, these would have been to secure the arms. The holes were never drilled through. The issue is that the side seat rails are long enough to accommodate the arms, the side chair seats arent as deep as the armchairs. So these 2 chairs have seats that are 1 1/2" deeper than the other side chairs. I mention this only so you understand the slip seats for these 2 chairs fit either the 2 armchairs or these 2 chairs only. Sounds more confusing than it is! Chairs are 40 1/2" tall and the armchairs across the arms are 27 1/2" wide and the side chairs are 20 1/2" wide. The armchairs are 22" deep and the side chairs are 20 1/2" deep(here is that 1 1/2" difference in seat depths). All have a seat height of 18 1/2". Chairs retain their original finish and there is some slight variation in color due to grain of wood and sun light. There are some dents and dings here and there and minor surface scratches. The worst is on the hand hold of 1 of the armchairs as can be seen in photo 5. less
