Amazing abstract expressionistic painting of a landscape where a village meets both mountains and ocean on a foggy day. At first look it appears to be just abstract colors forming a abstract painting. But as you spend a moment more the landscape comes into view. Possibly morning in Northern California near Monterey or further north. It could have been painted pleine aire. Grays and sublte blues, whites and taupes collide to create a moody environment. The village in the distance shows in burnt orange and whites.
The skies have a orange glow where sunrise or sunset is breaking through the clouds. The painting appears to use several techniques with both brush work and some subtle palette knife and possible fingertip. I sense influences of Cezanne but this is a wholly 20th century modern painting but a confident master. Most likely dated between 1930s-1950s. Small areas of the canvas remain unpainted, including the corner where it seems the painting was initialed.

The piece seems old. The linen is frayed in the back and stretched over wood that is stamped from Wolsey Co. El Monte. The frame is simple wood slays nailed to the sides. See less
