Karatsu is one of Japan's best-loved pottery styles. Like other styles, it derives its name from the city it's located in. Karatsu, meaning "China Port," is located in Saga Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. Karatsu pottery traces its roots back to the 15th century, but it is generally agreed that it matured in the latter half of the 16th century. This is due to the influx of Korean potters brought back by Lord Hideyoshi in what is often called the "pottery wars." Tea was favored among the lords at that time, with a Karatsu chawan being a most desired style, two other cherished styles being Raku and Hagi. The only family dating back to that time still in the Karatsu pottery world is the famous Nakazato family. They have an unbroken lineage of fourteen generations and are one reason of the continued success of the Karatsu style.
Johanna Becker in her fine book on Karatsu writes:
"Too much skill is evident on Karatsu ware to call it rustic; too much freedom and spontaneity to call it sophisticated. Its style lies somewhere between these poles. The undisguised display of natural materials -- the clay and its textures, glazes and designs applied rapidly and freely, crackled and pocked glazes, untrimmed foot rims and irregular shapes -- makes Karatsu immediately appealing to the senses without demand or pretension."

Nakazato Taroemon XIII Biography and dates :
1923: Born as the first son of the 12th generation of Nakazato Tarouemon in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture.
1943: Graduated from the Craft Design Course, Tokyo High School of Crafts (present day Faculty of Engineering, Chiba University).
1951: Selected for the 7th Japan Arts Exhibition for his Tocho work (ceramic sculpture), "Ushi" (cow) for the first time.
1956: Awarded the Hokuto Award at the 12th Japan Arts Exhibition for his work " Tou・Tataki Mishima Flower Vase (Mishima style paddled flower vase with inlaid design).
1958: Awarded the Special Commendation at the first Nitten Exhibition for his work, paddled jar "Ushi" (cow).
1961: Awarded the Japan Ceramic Society Award for his work "Tsubo" (jar) that was selected at the third Nitten Exhibition.
1969: Succeeded to the name of the 13th Nakazato Tarouemon.
1981: Awarded the Prime Minister's Award at the 13th Nitten Exhibition for his work "Tataki Karatsu Mishima Jar with Handles" (paddled jar with handles and inlaid design).
1984: Awarded the Japan Art Academy Award for his work "Tataki Karatsu Vase with Handles" (paddled vase with handles) that was entered the 15th Nitten Exhibition.
1985: Awarded the Saga Prefecture "Geijutsu bunka koro sho" (The Award Art and Cultural Distinguished Service by Saga Prefecture).
1992: Designated as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property of Saga Prefecture.
1995: Awarded the "Karatsu City koro sho" (The Award Distinguished Service by Karatsu City).
1997: Awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon.
1999: Awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon
2002: Entered the Buddhist priesthood at Kyoto Daitoku-ji Temple and received the dharma name "Hoan."
2004 : Obtained a doctoral degree for his paper "Research of Karatsu ware."
2007: Became a member of the Japan Art Academy.
2008 : Awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. Appointed an adviser of the Japan Art Academy.
2009: Passed away on March 12. Given "Shogoi" (Senior Fifth Rank).
