She sold it to a client … Read more This Louisiana river scene was painted by Marcella Packard of New Orleans in 1969. She sold it to a client of her art gallery, "The Packard Gallery", on Rue Dumaine in the old town. Packard specialized in scenes around the French Quarter and on the rivers of Southern Louisiana. Here she depicts a steam-driven sidewheeler boat going upriver past a plantation building, and showing several passengers in historic dress on board. On the reverse, she titled the painting in pencil: "Old Mississippi River Sidewheeler and Plantation by Marcella Packard New Orleans, LA '69". It is also signed in paint in the lower right as "Marcella Packard '69".

Packard was self-taught and became successful selling her works to locals and visitors to New Orleans. The frame is hand-carved and gilded and painted in Mexico and was chosen by the artist. The frame's off-white linen liner, the gold tones, and the olive green band are pleasant echoes of the colors of the painting. The overall dimensions of the framed painting are listed below.
