In French, fleur-de-lis means flower of the lily, which is symbolized by a three-petaled iris tied by an encircling band. According to legend, Louis VII dreamed of irises before setting out on the Crusades in 1137. He adopted the flower as his emblem and it became known as the Fleur de Louis.
