It depicts a lonely walled Japanese shrine among a wintery landscape
Pieter Irwin Brown (aka Pieter van Oort and Pieter Vandordt) (Dutch, 1903-1988) was an European artist who contributed to the Japanese Shin Hanga movement during the 1930's.
Born in Rotterdam, Holland, he studied in The Royal Academy of Amsterdam. During his life he traveled extensively through Europe, Africa and Asia, supporting himself by working as a freelance artist.
Eventually settling in London for some time during the 1920's-30's, he and Rickman Ralph started a small advertising business designing posters for railroad companies.
In the early 1930's Brown visited Egypt, Indonesia, and Japan. From his home in Kyoto, he made trips to China, Manchuria, and Korea. Around 1935, Brown met the woodblock publisher Watanabe and sold him several drawings of Japanese scenes, which latter were published.
Around 1940's after leaving Japan, the artist started using his mothers name, signing as Pieter van Oort (Oordt)
Like other Shin Hanga artists, Brown used the Western techniques of perspective and shadowing to create dimension and depth. However, inspired by the flat areas of color in the Japanese ukiyo-e prints he was combining both ideas. While the foreground would be realistic and dimensional, the background would display limited palette and minimal details, thus creating flat, decorative effect.
