Madame Chéruit was one of the first women to run a couture house in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, on the Place Vendôme. Her style and refinement were internationally recognized, and she dressed many clients, including the wife of our artist, Paul-César Helleu, who represented Madame Chéruet on many occasions.

Paul César Helleu (1859-1927) was a French painter and engraver who entered Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1876, but was more attracted to outdoor painting, becoming a friend of Claude Monet and Giovanni Boldini, among others.
Of his extensive career, we'll note his debut with the ceramist Theodore Deck, for whom he created decorations for dishes; his many portraits of Parisian high society and elegant women; his exhibitions of unusual paintings at the Salon des Artistes, with Les Grandes Eaux du Bassin de Latone; his decoration of the starry vaulted ceiling of New York's Grand Central Terminal in 1912\.
