Both the flower (gol) and the nightingale (bolbol) are important motifs in Middle Eastern literature and especially in the imagery of Middle Eastern poetry. The rose alone served as a literary metaphor for perfection and beauty and could represent the lover (secular or spiritual) or the prince, while the sweetly singing nightingale could represent the lover or the poet. The flowers and the nightingale together are the types of the lover and the lover par excellence; the flowers are beautiful, proud, and often cruel (flowers can sometimes have thorns), while the nightingale sings incessantly of her longing and devotion.
This Sarough rug is hand knotted from cork wool on cotton and is in new and unused condition. Very fine and dense knotting with about 360,000 knots / m².
