After studying to be a mechanical engineer, Alexander Calder changed professions, opting for life as an artist. Inspired by motion and play (he once attended a circus show for two weeks straight) Calder began creating mobiles. Composed of biomorphic shapes connected by wire, early Alexander Calder artwork consisted of kinetic sculptures rendered in bold, primary colors. Other Alexander Calder artwork includes lithographs, which despite being two-dimensional, display the same exuberance and animation as his iconic mobiles.
