What is wicker?

Wicker is a style of weaving. Wicker weaving can be carried out with a variety of pliable wood branches, including willow, rattan, or bamboo. The word “wicker” originates from the Scandinavian word “wika” which means “to bend.” If you’ve ever been confused about the difference between wicker furniture and rattan, know that rattan is a literal material, while wicker is simply a weaving method. Wicker weaving is a commonly used method for indoor and outdoor decor, including tables, chairs, and patio sets. Despite it being commonly used for outdoor furniture, traditional wicker materials like reed, willow and bamboo are not the most durable materials when it comes to exposure to the elements. For this reason, most newly-constructed wicker patio furniture is composed of a synthetic material like resin. If you favor the look of willow, reed, rattan, or bamboo wicker, stick to souring those pieces for indoor projects.
