What is the difference between a sideboard and a buffet?

Sideboards and buffets are technically the same piece of furniture—a long, low storage piece with doors, similar to a credenza—however, when used in a dining room, the piece is known as a buffet, and when used in a living room or hallway, the piece is known as a sideboard. In a dining room, buffets are typically used to stow entertaining essentials like linens, candles, and serveware. When entertaining, their tops are often utilized as a serving station (hence the name, buffet). Alternatively, they can be used as a dessert station, coffee station, or even as a bar. In the living room, sideboards are more commonly used as media cabinets. The interior space can be allotted to electronic equipment like remotes, sound systems, and the like, while the top can be used to display a TV. Sideboards can also be used in lieu of a dresser in a bedroom, or a credenza in a playroom.
