What is the difference between a loveseat and a sofa?

The main difference between a loveseat and a sofa is that a loveseat generally measures between 52″ and 64″ long, while a sofa, on average, measures 82″ long. Traditionally, loveseats seat two people, while sofas generally seat three or more. Likewise, loveseats are often outfitted with a single bench cushion, while sofas normally have two or more. Other than their differences in length, sofas and loveseats are fairly interchangeable design-wise. Both are bench-style seats equipped with formal backs and arms on either side. Because of their abbreviated size, loveseats are most often used in studios or small apartment living rooms, as well as bedrooms, while sofas are more commonly used in standard-sized living rooms and family rooms. Sofas are also more likely to come equipped with fold-out mattress capabilities, making them appealing for use in guestrooms where space may be tight enough to warrant a loveseat, but sleeping capabilities outweigh the extra space allotment that’s required.
