What is the difference between a hassock and an ottoman?

The main difference between an ottoman and a hassock is that a hassock is a footstool that contains no storage, and an ottoman is a footstool that does have storage. If that definition sounds peculiar to you—don’t fret. Today, ottomans are often marketed as footstools with and without storage. Essentially, the word “ottoman” has come to include both ottomans and hassocks. All of that said, searching the word “hassock” can produce a narrowed-down offering of footstools that are more similar to poufs. Like poufs, hassocks generally possess no feet or storage. Essentially, they are large, sturdy floor pillows. Searching “ottomans” will produce a wider array of results. Ottoman results will include everything from upholstered cocktail tables with storage to cylindrical cushioned seats with and without legs, as well as upholstered square cubes with removable lids and upholstered benches on hairpin legs.
