What is a settee?

In the modern design world, a settee is generally considered to be a short sofa, similar in length to a loveseat. It generally features a high, structured back and sides, with an exposed wood frame and upholstery (although an exposed wood frame is not required for a piece to be considered a settee). Typically, a settee is much more formal-looking than a loveseat and could almost be considered a hybrid between a sofa and a bench. As a result of their formality, settees are not often used to sub for a sofa or loveseat in a living room, but more frequently are used to adorn a hallway or bedroom, similar to how a bench would be used. Perhaps the most common settee style to find on the market is a French settee. French settees generally feature cabriole legs, and arched back and exposed wood frames. Wrap-around backs, square backs, or oval cut-out backs are also common features.
