Inside a Rustic Yet Contemporary Northern California Home

For the renovation of this four-bedroom home in Mill Valley, California, interior designer Elena Calabrese created a sophisticated yet casual look with an urban edge. Designing to enhance the home’s spectacular views, Calabrese mixed a gray-toned palette with subtle patterns, textural elements and natural materials to make a comfortable home for a family of three.

The home has an open plan with a combined kitchen and den space. The centerpiece is the fireplace, which is clad in charcoal ledgestone and features a custom-made reclaimed beam mantel. Custom walnut window seats on either side provide a comfortable spot to enjoy the view. In the kitchen, pendant lights from Niche Modern hang above an angled island made of slabs of Calacatta Borghini marble bookmatched to create a beautiful subtle design. The cabinetry is a combination of custom gray paint and dark smoky stain.
Soft patterning is added in the kitchen's buffet area with a Herringbone Calacatta tile backsplash. The gray painted cabinets have a more modern feel with frosted glass fronts and brushed stainless hardware.
The den is the coziest room in the house with a washed linen sectional sofa and throw pillows covered in a printed fabric from Larsen. The coffee table is full of texture with faux shagreen and reclaimed wood elements. The walls were painted a foggy gray color that enhances the mountain and coastal views outside.
A honed birch ledgestone fireplace and moody gray walls create a chic and comfortable look in the formal living room. The linen sectional and leather table anchor the space and provide ample seating for entertaining while the antique brass and steel chandelier adds a splash of midcentury modern detail to the room.
French ombre and snake skin velvet upholstered throw pillows add an extra level of luxury in the living room. The credenza was custom designed for the space and is made of ebony wood with an antique brass and steel base and horn pulls. A Markham Johnson seascape photograph hangs above and is flanked by a pair of horn table lamps.
The fireplace in the master bedroom was created from reclaimed wood from the Welch's grape farm in Washington state. The custom made steel surround and hearth was designed to add a bit of urban sophistication to the otherwise rustic look. Calabrese's design concept for the room was to create a serene hideaway for the clients who travel frequently.
The master bathroom continues the tranquil feel of the master bedroom. The cabinets are custom made from American walnut and the flooring is made of gray-toned faux wood tiles.
The free standing oval tub in the master bathroom has a spa-like feel and takes full advantage of the mountain views. The porcelain tiles feel rustic and chic at the same time.
