How to Arrange Sofa Pillows - The Minimalist

Simple and chic, a minimalist approach to throw pillows doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the fun. In fact, it’s the perfect way to highlight that show-stopping pillow pair, especially on a petite sized sofa where room to sit is already scarce.  Just be sure to snag a standard square that’s at least 20” or you run the risk of your set looking a tad sad.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
1 Pair of Standard Squares (24″, 22″, 20″)

How to Arrange Sofa Pillows - The Classic

You can’t go wrong with this classic approach, which brings a bit of color palette mixing into play. The going rule of thumb is to have your two pairs share at least one color for a cohesive look, but rules were meant to be broken at least some of the time so don’t be afraid to try something wild. A bit of size variation will help add visual interest.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
2 Pairs of Standard Squares in varying sizes (24″ + 22″) (22″ + 20″) (20″ + 18″)

How to Arrange Sofa Pillows - The Maximalist

We’re all about this pile-it-on approach to pillows, especially if your home includes fans of the pillow fort. The single lumbar can infuse the overall scheme with an unexpected punch of pattern or color, or even quietly bring a bit of texture to the party.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
2 Pairs of Standard Squares in varying sizes (24″ + 22″) (22″ + 20″)
1 Lumbar Pillow (typically around 14″ x 22″ to 24″ x 30″)

How to Arrange Sofa Pillows - The Comfort Seeker

Dare to throw the polish of symmetry out the window in favor of the unexpected. With an eye towards style, but also function, a nice mix of sizes will ensure you have what you need to cozy up, but you won’t have to sacrifice too much room to sit. This is a great approach for mixing in single pillows that you love but are sans a mate.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
1 Standard Square that’s on the larger side (24″ to 22″)
1 Standard Square that’s on the smaller side (22″ to 18″)
1 Lumbar Pillow (typically around 14″ x 22″ to 24″ x 30″)

How to Arrange Sofa Pillows - The Iconoclast

A single oversized lumbar is a total haute bohemian move, and looks especially killer on a sofa or settee with a tight seat and back. Scale up or down in length, depending on your sofa size. We’re partial to a bit of pattern here.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
1 Oversized Lumbar Pillow (typically between 36″- 60″ in length)
