Girandoles and chandeliers are both highly decorative lighting fixtures, but chandeliers are generally designed to hang from a ceiling like a pendant, while girandoles are more like sconces, intended to be affixed to a wall.

Originating in the 17th century, girandoles are typically smaller than chandeliers and are composed of a central decorative element, such as a mirror, surrounded by multiple candleholders or small lights. Traditionally, girandoles were designed to display and reflect candlelight. As time went on, they evolved into electrical fixtures but their ornate designs remained.

As opposed to small girandoles, chandeliers are larger, more lavish lighting fixtures designed to be hung from the ceiling. Chandeliers can feature several arms, each terminating in a light source. Unlike girandoles, which typically come in very traditional styles embellished with drop crystals, chandelier styles can be traditional or modern. They are designed to provide ample illumination to a room while also serving as a striking centerpiece. Chandeliers are generally used in entryways and dining rooms, but are also frequently found in living rooms and primary bathrooms.
