When making the call between carpet and a rug, it ultimately comes down to personal preference and the how you intend to use your floor covering. Carpet, also known as wall-to-wall carpet, is ideal for larger spaces, as it can be custom installed to cover your entire floor, providing a cohesive look. Carpet is are also great for areas with heavy foot traffic, as it is designed to withstand wear and tear better than rugs. In the event carpet does begin to show wear, it is generally easy and cost-effective to replace. While carpet comes in a variety of materials, colors, and patterns, it is typically solid color in appearance and will not provide dramatic decorative detail.

In contrast to carpet, rugs are effective at defining specific areas within a room. Since they tend to showcase more intricate patterns than carpets, they’re also good for adding a decorative touch. Additionally, rugs are great for layering over existing carpets or hardwood floors. Just like carpets, rugs come in a wide range of sizes, materials, and patterns, making it easy to find one that suits your style and budget.

In general, if you are looking for a floor covering to cover an entire room, then carpet is the best option. If you’re looking for a floor covering to add decorative flair or to define a specific area in a room — such as a seating area in a living room — then a rug is a better choice. Additionally, if you are looking for an option that can easily be swapped out, a rug will be your best bet.
