In Portola Valley, designer Melinda Mandell created a fresh and comfortable space for a young family. Mandell sourced many of the products locally: several furnishings were crafted by California-based makers, and others were made right in the Bay Area. Tour the house here to see how Mandell grounded the contemporary design in expert craftsmanship and compelling texture.

Mandell and her client chose a custom Ofuro soaking tub from Zen Bathworks to elevate the fresh design of the master bath; Japanese-style Ofuro tubs are deep enough to sit upright in and are crafted from fragrant wood; in this case, the designer and her client selected a traditional Hinoki wood. "The light wood tub looks stunning against the marble in the bathroom, and now [the client] can enjoy a steaming bath after a long day," says Mandell.
