With the surplus of neutral living room furnishings on the market, it’s easy to take the safe route — i.e. beige-on-beige-on-taupe. Pillows

There’s no easier way to say bye-bye to the beige blahs than a colorful throw pillow or two. Choose pillows in a bright, contrasting color to effectively enliven your room. Some colors to try if your palette is primarily tans and browns? Yellow in its many variant shades is a color you’ll often see designers using opposite neutral browns. For something less outspoken — as well as a little richer — forest greens and different shades of maroon and burgundy work too.

Art

Whether it be a vibrant abstract or a saturated photograph, there’s nothing like art to add a punch to a neutral room. Since art won’t physically touch other elements in your room like, say, pillows will, you can take a little more license with the colors you introduce. Go wild and opt for neons. To ensure nothing goes too off-kilter, opt for a white or black frame to tie things back to your dominant neutral palette.

Coffee Table Decor

Pile your coffee table with colorful accessories to break up the monotony of a neutral living room. Vases, books, decorative bowls and candlestick holders are all prime for introducing color to your space. Pepper in a few neutral pieces to keep the look grounded in your original palette.

Upholstery

A colorful accent chair or pouf can quickly dial up the color quota of a space. If you’re nervous about introducing an expensive upholstery piece to the mix, consider opting for a piece in a classic neutral complement such as pink, blue, or pastels. Yellow and green, as mentioned earlier, are also fairly fail-proof.
