1. Swapping out cabinet hardware

There’s no quicker way to give dated cabinets new life than replacing their knobs or pulls. Even cabinets in seemingly out-of-date wood finishes like oak or cherry can be coaxed into modern times with the addition of new hardware. (We personally love oil-rubbed bronze for oak and burnished brass for cherry.) Swapping out a cabinet pull will generally take about 3-5 minutes apiece, so multiply by your number of cabinets to get an accurate time estimate.

2. Painting a single room

While you wouldn’t want to attempt painting your entire house in a weekend, decking out a single room in a new hue is totally doable. Keep in mind that darker hues are likely to require primer — and hence, multiple coats. Opting for a warm weekend is also likely to speed up dry times, allowing you to finish the job quicker. Don’t think you need to opt for a full-room paint job, however. Painting a fireplace or the interior of cabinets are smaller jobs that can yield just as much impact.

3. Installing curtains

Nothing adds drama to a space like curtains. Hanging curtains, be they valances or drapes can usually be accomplished in a few hours, making it easy to procure a stunning effect with minimal effort. Keep in mind that switching out curtains is likely to be a multiple-weekend project in that you’ll need to measure and buy curtains prior to the weekend that you plan to hang them.

4. Painting a vanity

With its small scale, a bathroom vanity is a perfect candidate for a weekend paint job. Sand and paint one day and seal the next day. Bear in mind that you’ll likely want to seal your cabinet a half dozen times or so, so there may be spillover into Monday, especially if temps are colder than usual.
