Looking to set a modern mood in a bedroom? While modern bedroom sets can make easy work of creating a modern bedroom, opting for a matching everything can sometimes feel soulless. So how do you curate a modern room that feels every bit as luxe and layered as a traditional room? We share three tips to get you started, ahead!

Go low

One trait you’ll usually see in modern bedrooms is floor-skimming furniture. Look for a platform bed rather than a taller style that requires a box spring. Don’t think a wood bed is your only option, either. Although modern wood beds dominate retailers’ offerings, picking a colored upholstered bedframe is a great way to add interest to a modern room. Choose nightstands that are similarly low profile to keep your look clean and sleek.

Roll out a rug

Modern rooms sometimes get a rap for feeling the opposite of warm. Avoid any cold connotations by investing in an expansive area rug. Since most modern bedroom furniture tends to be sleek and hard-edged, choose a rug with some texture. High-pile shag rugs, in particular, are excellent choices for modern bedroom. To give your bedroom a little touch of vintage appeal without disrupting the modern feel, consider a Moroccan rug like a Beni Ourain rug. These high-pile shag rugs feature white bases with a minimalist black diamond designs laid overtop.

Invest in luxe lighting

Whether it’s a modern constellation-style chandelier or a mushroom lamp placed atop a nightstand, modern lighting will imbue any modern bedroom with character and warmth. Try swinging wall sconces for added visual interest over a nightstand, or globe pendants hung on either side of a bed. While it can be tempting to settle for overly simplistic, minimalist fixtures, use lighting as a chance to really embellish a modern bedroom.
