What size shutters do I need?

When picking out decorative shutters, you should typically select shutters that are about 1/2 to 1/4 the total width of your window (don’t forget to include window trim in your measurements!). This means that if you have a window that measures 24,” the total width of your shutters should be between 8″ to 12.” Remember: decorative shutters don’t need to be wide enough to actually close over your windows as they are usually intended to be stationary. With this in mind, most experts agree that shutters that are smaller than your actual window size tend to look best. In the event you are outfitting the entire facade of your house in shutters, you will likely want to choose a standard shutter width for all of your windows. It is also wise to consider how far apart your windows are when selecting a shutter size. If shutters that are 1/2 to 1/4 the size of your windows results in shutters that are almost touching, you may want to shorten your shutter width.
