What is a sofa table?
A sofa table is similar to—or in some cases interchangeable with—a console table. Sofa tables are long, narrow tables, measuring between 30 inches and 33 inches high that are designed to sit behind the back of a sofa and function similarly to a console table. Historically, sofa tables came equipped with drop leaves that could be unfolded to provide an extended serving space. Today, sofa tables are often adorned with a pair of lamps or decorative accents such as books or vases. In general, sofa tables are best suited for large rooms where the sofa floats in the middle of the room, rather than residing flush against a wall. When selecting a sofa table, it is important to consider the back height of your sofa. Ideally, you’ll want your sofa table to sit an inch or two lower than the top edge of your sofa’s back.
