Living room with patterned curtains and brown leather armchairs

Fall is all about getting cozy and transitioning from summer to winter, so it should come as no surprise that the home design colors most associated with the season are soft and comforting shades. From serene browns to deep ambers, here are 9 paint colors that are reminiscent of fall and perfect for creating a warm, welcoming interior.

    Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe No. 26

“When I think of fall, I think of wrapping myself up in a big comfy grey sweater. This is what the color of Down Pipe does for me in this living room. It is not dark and gloomy. It’s warm and cozy, and makes you want to stay in and watch you favorite movie.”

  • Benjamin Moore’s Narragansett Green (#HC-157)

"A dark, dramatic bedroom provides a restful respite from a busy life. We created a warm, cozy feel here with Narragansett Green on the walls, but kept it from being overwhelming with Benjamin Moore’s White Dove in a satin and flat finish on the trimwork and ceiling, respectively. Antiques mixed with soft modern artwork is one of my favorite combinations in any room and this one is no exception. The wonderful painting by Courtney Garrett across from the bed is a lovely contrast to the ornate Italian mirror on the opposite side of the window.”

  • Benjamin Moore’s Montpelier (AF-555)

“This room does not get much sunlight, so we decided to embrace the lack of light and create a cozy and intimate library and television room for our clients. The blue gray paint color, which is used on the wainscot, walls, and trim, coordinates with the velvet upholstery on the sofa and helps to create a comfortable yet elegant space. It is a perfect room for relaxing in with a glass of wine, a good book, or a favorite movie after a long week!”

  • Benjamin Moore’s Autumn Orange (#2156-10)

“This color is a personal favorite. It has enough brown to keep it from being punchy, but it still reflects warmly. It’s the color I painted my own apartment, and the glow it provides makes everyone’s skin looks amazing.”

  • Farrow & Ball’s London Clay No. 244

“This is one of my all-time favorite paint colors in any season, but in the fall it creates an especially cozy, dramatic environment. In this transitional living room, I used London Clay on the wall to the left of the fireplace. It's a warm brown with magenta undertones and is the perfect complement to the two chairs covered in a fall-colored print and the colorful, autumnal artwork. London Clay is a complex and nuanced color. It takes on an aubergine cast in certain light and works well with red and gold accents. ”

  • Benjamin Moore Dark Teal (#2053-20)

“We love this shade of teal as it transitions with the seasons and adds a much needed pop of color during the winter months. This color looks beautiful in a gloss finish on woodwork and paneling and complements traditional autumnal colors like orange, yellow, and cranberry. It creates a dramatic backdrop to highlight the details of crystal lighting and rich wood furniture and is welcoming to guests. Perfect for a country home.”

  • Farrow & Ball’s Charleston Gray

“The inspired painters from the Bloomsbury Group reportedly used this moody, slushy gray extensively, presumably to enhance the atmospheric quality of the English light on their walls. Here, in a California Craftsman, the quietness of this soothing color establishes a cool, low-key hush over this charming study for a hip, young family. The deeper tone on the trim, Farrow & Ball’s London Clay, adds additional depth and a feeling of cozy warmth to the space.”

  • PPG Paints’ Shining Armor from the Knight’s Watch Collection (PPG1003-5)

“I feel fall is a serene but powerful time of change, and this warm taupe color from PPG reminds me of that duality. I used it in satin finish for the walls and ceilings of this living room. When used as background for golds and off-whites, it adds a luxurious depth.”

  • Sydney Harbour Paints’ Toy Soldier

“The first color that comes to mind is Sydney Harbour’s Toy Soldier, which is seen above as a flat lacquer on the cabinets in this newly renovated Calabasas kitchen. It’s a timeless color, and it reminds me of Thanksgiving.”
