What Is The Difference Between A Chest Of Drawers And A Dresser?

Chest of drawers and dressers are very similar — as they’re both traditionally used for storage in a bedroom — but have slightly different configurations.

A chest of drawers is a tall, narrow piece of furniture with multiple drawers stacked on top of each other. These pieces are typically used for storing clothing, but can also be used for stowing other items. Chest of drawers reached their height of popularity in the early to mid-20th century, and as a result, most chests of drawers feature vintage styling and are made of wood.

In contrast, a dresser is a wider and lower piece of furniture with several drawers of varying or uniform sizes. Because dressers are not as tall as chests of drawers, they’re more likely to have a vanity mirror attached to the top.

In general, dressers are more popular today than chests of drawers. Their low height makes them ideal for placing a TV atop them in a bedroom or hanging large-scale, eye-level artwork over them. For this reason, it’s common to find dressers crafted from a wide assortment of modern-day materials. At Chairish, you can discover wood dressers as well as laminate dressers, rattan and bamboo dressers, wicker dressers and more.
