MEET DONOVAN LORD BACKGROUND I always loved architecture and interior design. As a kid, I would design houses and floor plans with crayons, Lincoln Logs and playing cards. I also constantly rearranged my room and my mom’s house. I received my bachelor’s degree in interior architecture and design and my master’s degree in architecture from the Academy of Art University. I wanted to be knowledgeable about the entire structure, not just the interiors. In addition to design, I am a licensed real estate broker with my own brokerage firm. I sell to friends, family and the occasional client. Personally, I have been married now for eight years. I have two dogs, Jax (named for my favorite artist Jackson Pollack) and Raven. I play the violin, piano, and occasionally the guitar. I also enjoy painting in oils (mostly abstract art), photography, and for the past several years, I’ve been writing a memoir that I hope to have published this year. PERSONAL STYLE My personal style is very modern – I love midcentury modern, contemporary and some transitional. My home is filled with iconic furniture designed by Eames, Le Corbusier and vintage midcentury antiques, as well as furnishings that I designed and had made. I like my home to be warm, modern, and not feel overly decorated, but a result of my personality and style. That being said, I design all styles! DESIGN INSPIRATION I love Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, as well as Daniel Liebskind, Rem Koolhaus and ANYTHING by Eames. As for publications, I’m a fan of Architectural Digest, Dwell and Atomic Ranch. DESIGN STRATEGY Design is a skill, so it translates to any design aesthetic. My job is to design a space not for myself, but for its inhabitants. It’s about LISTENING and truly understanding their needs, wants and preferences. After that, it’s all fun!
