I’m fascinated by the exquisitely beautiful way light can fall on someone’s face, illuminating and obscuring, and I love how the face can illuminate the inner life of a person. Whenever I paint someone, I strive to capture an element of their personality, and that becomes the focus of the painting.
I approach animals, another favorite subject, similarly—by trying to intuit the animal’s inner nature, then letting that feeling guide the look of the painting.
Living in Lisbon, I’m surrounded by beauty. The city is thousands of years old, and its buildings are covered in colorful patterned tiles. I’ve been inspired to create my own colorful patterns, and I include them in my paintings.
