moreThis French 1920s lithographic poster shows an elephant transporting coffee - the perles des indes (pearls of India) - through the jungle. Coffee beans were brought to India from Yemen by Baba Budan in 1670, and led to coffee plantations appearing all over Southern India. Theirs is said to be the finest coffee grown in the shade rather than direct sunlight anywhere in the world, and mostly grows under monsoon rainfall conditions. It's been said that "The best Indian coffee reaches the flavour characteristics of Pacific coffees, but at its worst it is simply bland and uninspiring”. The two best-known species of Indian coffee are the Arabica and Robusta.
