Brunette patina test signed H. Chapu (1833-1891) of the Barbedian foundry.
Henri Michel Antoine Chapu entered the School of Fine Arts in 1849. He is the pupil of James Pradier (1790-1852), Francisque-Joseph Duret (1804-1861) and the painter Léon Cogniet (1794-1880).
Henri Chapu won in 1851 the second Grand Prix of engraving in medal, in 1853 the second Grand Prix de Sculpture and in 1855 the first sculpture Grand Prix (Rome Prize).
Presented at the last Salon of the Second Empire in 1870, "Joan of Arc in Domrémy" was transcribed into marble in 1872 and experienced considerable success. Jeanne d'Arc, national emblem and true secular holy, was adored long before his canonization by the Vatican in 1920. Indeed, France of the 19th century was passionate about the figure of Joan of Arc, historical and mythified heroine.
With this bronze, Henri Chapu explores with finesse the way of a sincere and elegant naturalism. He does not choose to represent the warrior virgin in armor but the shepherdess Lorraine hearing the voices which ask him to help the king to release the kingdom.
Joan of Arc is represented sitting, the legs folded under her body. His hands joined downwards and his serious face turned to the sky. Its flexible hair is retained by a veil. Her simple dress is draped with meticulousness and her feet are naked.
This bronze is striking by its charisma and the force that escapes it.
