A handsome victorian moroccan leather letter box, with two slots to the top, one for ''answered'' correspondence and the other for ''un answered''. The box is covered in black embossed leather, with brass mounted lock with the royal patent london. The interior is totally original, with the manufacturers mark j.w. & t allen 18 - 22 strand london. C1840
j.w allan established as trunk and military outfitters j.w. Allen were one of the longest standing barrack and camp equipage makers in british history. We know that they were established in 1798 as they advertised their longevity on their catalogues and invoices at the turn of 1900.
j.w. & t. Allen started in the early 1840s. It is probable that john william and thomas allen were john's sons with the father's namesake using the addition of his second name to distinguish himself from his parent. An advert of 1857 uses both the names w & t allen and in smaller print j.w. & t. Allen. By 1861 the company's name appears simply as j.w. Allen with thomas removed.

- Upon inspection, If you decide not to move forward with the purchase, you or your agent must refuse the item at the time of pickup/delivery from the seller

- Chairish Express In-Home deliveries are currently only offered for international cross-border shipments.
- The item will be delivered to your home and placed in the desired room. The delivery service includes unpacking, inspecting, and removing packaging materials; and does not include installation or setting up the item.
- Shipping charges start at $999 and vary based on the size, weight, packaging, and/or the value of the item.
- Deliveries can take anywhere from 6 to 9 weeks to be delivered.
- Chairish Freight Delivery
- Delivered in a crate, to your front door.
- You will need tools and/or equipment to open the crate.
- Shipping charges start at $799 and vary based on the size, weight, packaging, and/or the value of the item.
- Chairish Freight deliveries can take anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks.
- Only available in selected markets.
- Chairish In-Home Delivery
- The item will be delivered to your home and placed in the desired room. The delivery service includes unpacking, inspecting, and removing packaging materials; and does not include installation or setting up the item.
